Rae is a Haitian-American writer and educator, born and raised in South Florida. She received a 2018 Silver Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition for her poem “Red Blood Cell.” She earned her bachelor’s as a double major in Psychology and English with a Concentration in Multicultural and Gender Studies and her master’s in English Literature with a Specialization in Caribbean Literature from Florida Atlantic University. Her poetry has been published and/or forthcoming in Rigorous Magazine, The Anti-Languorous Project, and Strange Horizons. Now that Grownish is out for the year, I’ve been looking forward to other shows to keep me occupied. This has definitely been pretty high on that list.

Somehow I simultaneously couldn’t put this book down but I couldn’t keep reading. I had to reread several statements just to make sure I’d read them right. It was painful to read at times, but also quite necessary. The edition I’m reviewing is an uncorrected proof I received from a friend at Penguin Random House.
